Benchmarks, a placemaking initiative for the Civic District, presents a series of art benches by six Singapore-based artists. Sited between The Arts House and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, they punctuate one’s walk through the Civic District with rhythm and meaning, inviting the public to engage with its rich history.
"A benchmark is a standard against which others are measured or judged. It may also refer to a mark on a permanent object used for precise measurements. Within this curatorial framework, we playfully utilise the concept of benchmarks by designing benches that serve as both physical objects of rest and points of reference for reimagining our art and cultural heritage. Designed by six Singapore-based artists, these benches actively invite visitors to engage with the Civic District's rich history, serving as dynamic markers that encourage exploration and appreciation of the district’s cultural significance. The benches along a passage trail, between The Arts House and Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, are akin to different punctuation marks, infusing one’s walk through the Civic District with rhythm and meaning. Just as punctuation marks provide breaks and structure to a passage of text, these artistically designed benches punctuate one’s journey, offering moments of pause and reflection." - Justin Loke, Project Curator

Story Walk: Digital Stories
Story Walk – Digital Stories is the digital iteration of StoryFest’s outdoor roving storytelling experience organised by Arts House Limited and The Storytelling Centre Limited in partnership with Civic District’s new public art trail, Benchmarks.
Rediscover a side of the Singapore River with stories inspired by some of our most iconic monuments and public spaces. Taking cues from three commissioned public art benches, each storyteller will share a unique tale, weaving local history with folklore. These tales bring to light the interconnectedness between the bench artworks, their surroundings, and the rich heritage of the district.
Story Walk is conceptualised by Kamini Ramachandran featuring stories created by Verena Tay. These stories are brought to life by storytellers Wesley Leon Aroozoo, Laura Kee and Hafiz Rashid.
