Drawing inspiration from the text “This is Not a Pipe” in René Magritte’s iconic painting The Treachery of Images, the artist's design redefines the form and function of a bench. By employing ambiguous shapes and a complementary colour scheme, the concept involves the creation of “duo benches.” Situated in front of The Arts House Annex building, this art bench aims to challenge the conventional notion of a singular bench, offering users the opportunity to explore diverse postures and engage with sitting in innovative and dynamic ways. It encourages individuals to experiment and play with different sitting positions, opening up new possibilities for interaction and reimagining the bench.
It is a piece that involves an outreach programme with students selected by Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Six students participated in three workshops conducted by Lua Boon Kai in his making of the art bench. The students are Emanuel Chen Chin See, Evangeline Jessica Soebagia, Ryan Ho Swee An, Hur Min, Liu Mengyao and Richellyn Chenvi.
