Chowk Productions presents FEW LAST WORDS, an original work of dance and theatre conceptualized and directed by Argentinian director Guillermo Angelelli and choreographed by Raka Maitra. Inspired by Henry Miller's autobiographical novel Tropic of Capricorn and T.S. Elliot's poem The Hollow Men, this devised performance weaves movement, music, and words to contemplate the duality of (Wo)mankind; threading the sphere of subconsciousness, between waking dreams and walking death.
The production juxtaposes Miller's challenge to Western norms with the Odissi dance form's challenge to Indian civilizational values. Dance practice at Chowk honors the heterodox philosophies - the gender fluidity of the Vaishnavaite and Saivaite traditions (7th-12th century C.E.) that inform both the popular dance of the gotipua and ritualistic temple dance of the Maharis, the folk aesthetics of the Indian travelling theatre, Jatra and the Sanksritic princiiples of the Natyasasthra - in which Odissi is rooted. Behind the veil of conventional respectability lies the liminal human experience, in between moral paradigms, social roles and class lines; Last Few Words embodies Miller's exploration of this space between worlds through Chowk's unique movement idiom.
