Valerie Ng’s abstract paintings are a gestural expression of mood and movement. Working mostly in oil on canvas or acrylic on paper, they are created as a result of her explorations in colour, light, depth, form and texture. She strives for a dynamic balance of quiet energy through a transfer of marks in the action of painting. Drawing inspiration from the natural elements, hues and shapes in the environment for the artworks to evoke an experience or atmospheric feel.
Her paintings have been exhibited at the Singapore Art Museum as well as the National Art Gallery, Malaysia. She has had solo exhibitions at the Substation, Maya, Mulan and former Wetterling Teo Gallery, as well as group exhibitions at One East Asia, instinc and Jendela Gallery at the Esplanade. In addition, her works have been in art fairs across the region and auctioned by Larasati Auctioneers.
She won the Bronze Award at the 2018 UOB Painting of the Year competition as well as First Prize (Abstract) in the 2004 UOB POY in Singapore. In 2019, she was a finalist in the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in Hong Kong and in 2006, selected for the Young Contemporaries in Malaysia.
After attending the Summer Foundation at The Slade School of Fine Art (UCL), UK in 2002 she continues to expand her artistic journey through travel and artist residencies in Europe, New Zealand, Vermont USA and Iceland. Her paintings can be found in private and corporate collections locally and overseas.
