Singapore’s premier creative writing competition will be accepting online submissions from 25 April – 13 June 2023
Singapore, 17 April 2023 — Organised by Arts House Limited (AHL), the biennial Golden Point Award (GPA) established by the National Arts Council (NAC) in 1993, returns for its 16th edition this year. GPA will be accepting online submissions from 25 April – 13 June 2023, and participants can choose to submit their works under the Short Story and Poetry categories, in the nation’s four official languages: English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil, and the Translation category for Short Story in English.
This year, AHL will partner Singapore Book Council (SBC) to combine AHL’s extensive experience organising a wide range of literary initiatives with SBC’s substantial portfolio in managing high profile literary awards and competitions. The GPA will continue to grow as an important platform for discovering talented new writers, fostering a community of writers and creating a conducive environment for literary expression in Singapore.
Under the new partnership, the national writing competition will introduce two new components to GPA 2023:
- Translation category for short story
The translation category aims to encourage the translation of short stories originally written by Singaporean writers in Chinese, Malay, and Tamil (CMT) to English. This will allow local CMT works to reach new audiences and increase their accessibility, in turn cultivating greater cross-cultural understanding. This category will also put a spotlight on translation and translators.
- Mentorship programme for prize winners
A mentorship programme will be implemented to provide opportunities for winners to fine-tune their writing skills and grow in their creative writing endeavours. Published and established writers from the Singapore community will be invited to mentor all the winners of GPA 2023 to support them in refining their winning work and guide them in putting together a collection of poems, short stories or translated work that could have potential for publication.
Winners for this year’s Golden Point Award can look forward to prizes of up to $6,000 in cash and trophies as well as receiving the mentorship programme.
The following prizes will be awarded for each of the four languages across Short Story (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil), Poetry (English, Chinese, Malay and Tamil), and Translation: Short Story (English) categories.
