OUT OF SIGHT is a participatory, interactive, social sculpture by one of the world's top living artists. Taking the form of a giant hopscotch court, populated with fun and provocative phrases, OUT OF SIGHT invites audiences of all ages to see, play, think and be inspired. New York-based Lawrence Weiner specifically created this artwork with the outlook of young people in mind: the stances they take, and the steps they must take as they launch into life.
Lawrence Weiner has been at the forefront of conceptual art since the 1960s. His practice incorporates subtle and imaginative use of text, exceptional, minimalist graphic design, as well as a sophisticated take on the artist's position with respect to the object, the viewer, and the experience of the work.
On display in Singapore for a limited time only, come down to the Civic District where you can see this unique floor sculpture, alongside the many things there are to do and see at National Gallery Singapore and The Arts House.

ABOUT THE INSTALLATION
OUT OF SIGHT is an interactive 'sculpture' by internationally recognized American conceptual artist Lawrence Weiner. The OUT OF SIGHT marelle (or hopscotch in French) is a curved structure that suggests a fluid and engaged journey of forward motion for participants.
Participants are encouraged to move along the OUT OF SIGHT pathway and activate the ideas within OUT OF SIGHT in their own expressive way. The core OUT OF SIGHT phrases are:
- ASSUMING A POSITION
- PRESUME A DESTINATION &
- ONE CAN ONLY IMAGINE THE POWERS THAT BE
- & IMAGINED THINGS CAN BE ALTERED TO SUIT
- SPIT INTO THE WIND HOPE FOR THE BEST
- THE DESTINATION IS STRAIGHT ON
- OUT OF SIGHT
Materials will be provided to encourage viewers to consider further these playful statements in the context of their own lives. OUT OF SIGHT is not only a work of art but also acts as a metaphorical framework for the journey of self-discovery and empowerment, enlivening the experience of anyone who encounters it.
OUT OF SIGHT is an artwork that celebrates the potential within all of us to connect with ourselves and with other in a process of shared exploration.
The Civic District presents OUT OF SIGHT by world-renowned American artist Lawrence Weiner, in a partnership between National Gallery Singapore and The Arts House.

About Lawrence Weiner
Lawrence Weiner attended the New York public school system. The late 1950s and early 60s were spent traveling throughout North America (USA - Mexico and Canada). The first presentation of the work was in Mill Valley California in 1960.
Weiner divides his time between his studio in New York City and his boat in Amsterdam. He participates in public and private projects and exhibitions in the new and the old world maintaining that:
Art is the empirical fact of the relationships of objects to objects in relation to human beings & not dependent upon historical precedent for either use or legitimacy.
A person coming in with whatever situation they find themselves in, the minute they have any thoughts about themselves going FROM HERE TO THERE, they will be able to stand in front of the marelle and realize they first have to imagine themselves doing it, that’s assuming a position,
