About the Residency

The NAC and ECLA are pleased to offer a fully paid residency to one Singapore writer at ECLA Aquitaine in Bordeaux, France, as part of *Singapour en France – le festival. An initiative by the National Arts Council & ECLA Aquitaine and managed by The Arts House, the Singapore – France Writing Residency aims to provide Singapore writers space and resources to write and hone their craft and to raise the profile of Singapore writers and literature in France through participation in key literary events.

This Residency also seeks to facilitate greater inter-cultural understanding between Singapore and French literary professionals.

*Singapour en France – le festival (March – June 2015) is presented by Institut français, the National Heritage Board and the National Arts Council, and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Development (France), Ministry of Culture and Communication (France), the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (Singapore) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Singapore) to celebrate 50 years of Singapore-France diplomatic relations and Singapore’s Golden Jubilee.

Residency Duration

This is a six-week programme that will take place from 2 March 2015 to 13 April 2015.

Residency Support

The resident will be awarded full residency support, including return economy class airfare, accommodation in Bordeaux and Paris*, per diem of S$50/day and ground transport within France.
* ECLA Aquitaine may arrange for the resident to participate in public events / programmes in Paris.

Application

The applicant must be a Singapore citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident who is actively engaged in the literary arts industry. He/she must possess a record of past achievements, strong artistic merit, commitment towards advancing the art form and contribution to the Singapore arts scene.

The applicant must be in the process of creating a new, original work or have the intention of creating a new original work; and should write in English, Chinese, Malay or Tamil.

All applications must be supported with:

a. Curriculum vitae

b. A proposal outlining the applicant’s plans for work to be undertaken during the Residency.

c. Two sets of writing samples representative of the applicant’s body of work and potential. (These may be submitted either as hardcopies or PDF documents).

All submissions and supporting documents must be typed out. Applications that include handwritten texts will be disqualified.

Applicants must not submit original copies of writing samples, as these will not be returned to applicants. If the submission includes a copy of an excerpt from a published source, the following information must be submitted:

a. Title page showing title of work and name of author

b. Name of publisher and year of publication

c. Contents page

Fiction manuscripts must be typed double-spaced (except excerpts from published texts). Poetry manuscripts should be typed single-spaced. Prose manuscripts must be typed double-spaced (except excerpts from published texts).

Each manuscript should include a title page with title of the work, author’s name and year the work was completed.

Chinese, Malay and Tamil language writers are required to submit samples of their work translated into English. Writers are strongly encouraged to work with a professional literary translator to produce these translations.
