Created by award-winning choreographer and filmmaker Sue Healey with music by New Zealand jazz legend Mike Nock, Virtuosi is a feature-length documentary about the drive to be an artist and the special nature of virtuosity in dance. Through exhilarating dance and stories from the heart, Virtuosi reveals intimate and astounding portraits of eight New Zealand dance artists who left their homeland in their youth to pursue careers around the world. They have each achieved remarkable things in the world of contemporary dance, and through this film audiences will witness their artistry as they reflect on their careers.
Virtuosi weaves ideas and dances across many cities and cultures – Berlin, Brussels, London, Melbourne, New York, Sydney, Townsville – to reveal fascinating dance lineages and creative insights.
It is the nature of the embodied knowledge of dance that drives this film. What is its uniqueness? What is its power? Why dance?
Artists featured include Mark Baldwin, Craig Bary, Lisa Densem, Raewyn Hill, Sarah-Jayne Howard, Jeremy Nelson, Ross McCormack and Claire O’Neil.
There will be an artist dialogue with Sue Healey after the film screening.

ABOUT SUE HEALEY
Sue Healey is a multi-award winning choreographer, educator, filmmaker and installation artist.
Based in Sydney since 2000, she has created 4 major collections:
Niche series (2002-04), In Time series (2005-07), Curiosities series (2008-12) and On View series (2013 - present). These encompass over 30 works across multiple genres; live performance, dance, film, gallery installations and international collaborations. They have won awards nationally and internationally, and the major works from each series have been presented by Sydney Opera House and have toured to Canberra, Japan, Melbourne and New Zealand.
Experimenting with form and perception, Healey creates dance for diverse spaces: theatres, galleries and the camera. Her films have been finalists in major international film festivals and have been broadcasted by Australian and European television networks. Healey is an acknowledged pioneer of dance on screen. Her films are widely acclaimed and have won many awards and have been screened in over 30 countries. Virtuosi has been screened in American Dance Festival, Amsterdam, Auckland Arts Festival, Berlin, DocEdge festival Wellington, Hobart, Montreal, New York, Portugal, Prague and many other international festivals in 2013/14. The film won an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance on Film 2013 and a Silver ACS award for cinematographer Judd Overton. Her film The Golds won Diamond award at IPAMA, Indonesia 2015 and will screen in Lincoln Centre New York, Dance on Camera Festival 2016.
