Who is the Malay person in Singapore?
In this play-within-a-play, local theatre company, The Second Breakfast Company, brings Alfian Sa’at’s anthology of short stories, Malay Sketches, to the stage. Through stage enactments of sketches from the book, Performing Malay Sketches peels back the layers of this text exploring the question of how to construct and portray the Malay identity in Singapore - and how it is represented, perceived and celebrated.

The Second Breakfast Company
The Second Breakfast Company (2BCo) is a not-for-profit theatre company founded by youths, for youths. 2BCo aspires to become a leading youth theatre company advocating for an inclusive theatre culture built by young people for young people by cultivating youth audiences through programmes and initiatives that engage a wider network of youths and deepens their appreciation of the performing arts, empowering the next generation of creatives by providing platforms and safe spaces to express their creativity on stage and challenging young people with fresh perspectives through revisiting old stories and telling new ones.
Adeeb Fazah, Writer and Co-director
Adeeb studied Theatre Studies and Drama at the A Levels and completed a minor in Drama and Performance at Nanyang Technological University where he majored in Communication Studies. In 2014, his work on the reconstruction of Yellow Chair Productions’ original piece You Think, I Thought, Who Confirm? earned him a mention in Timeout Singapore ’s Rising Stars in the article ‘30 Things We Love About Theatre in Singapore’. Adeeb has also contributed to his school through his directing work for some of the productions he was involved with, like the restoration comedy The Beaux’ Stratagem and self-written Singaporean comedy Eighth Storey. In 2015, Adeeb founded The Second Breakfast Company with a few like-minded colleagues from Yellow Chair Productions. The company strives to become a leading youth theatre company advocating for an inclusive theatre culture built by young people for young people.
His role as artistic director of The Second Breakfast Company has seen him direct shows ranging from Singapore classics like Goh Poh Seng’s The Moon Is Less Bright, to original works like Myle Yan Tay’s Lemmings which was runner up in the youth category for the 2014 24-Hour Playwriting Competition. Adeeb is currently an artist-in-residence at Gateway Theatre, and is a contract drama instructor with Toy Factory Productions.
Mark Benedict Cheong, Co-director
Mark pursued Theatre Studies and Drama during his ‘A’ Levels, and subsequently completed a minor in drama in his time at NTU. He co-produced his school production of The Beaux Stratagem after which, he joined Yellow Chair Productions. There, he acted in a reading of Haresh Sharma’s Still Building, was sound designer for Monoplay and assistant stage manager for Our Time.
Shortly after, he co-wrote and was production manager for the first NTU hall 12 production, Eighth Storey. Following the development and founding of The Second Breakfast Company, Mark has taken up the role of production designer and assistant director for many of the company’s productions, Working on Family, Double Bill: Lemmings and The Wedding Pig, The Moon Is Less Bright, and Lovebites, in which he also acted. Through his work, Mark is working to create
a more inclusive theatre culture for the youth in Singapore.
When he is not busy having Second Breakfast, Mark runs Need To Reply, a collective of artists from different backgrounds looking to foster conversation and collaboration. He is also working with Thong Pei Qin on a site specific production titled Bitten: Return to our Roots.
